Who is Somass Hall for?

Located in Port Alberni, Somass Hall is a welcoming gathering place for the Tseshaht First Nation. Designed to bring people together, it supports cultural events, community gatherings, workshops and celebrations, while also providing a dedicated space for youth and family services.
The hall reflects the nation’s commitment to strengthening families, culture and community well-being, offering an ideal space for large, close-knit families to connect. The building envelope installed by Skytec enhances the buildings durability, efficiency and year-round comfort.
emergency gathering place
Somass Hall was designed to serve not only as a community hub, but also as an emergency gathering place for the Tseshaht First Nation. Built to post-disaster standards, the facility includes a backup generator, emergency water supply, and enhanced structural resilience to support the community during emergencies such as severe storm or earthquakes. Designed to provide shelter and essential support services when needed most. Somass Hall strengthens the Nation’s long-term safety, preparedness, and resilience.
“Tseshaht families, children and elders will once again have a welcoming space to gather, celebrate and support one another.”
Enviroshingle Cladding Feature
Somass Hall features Enviroshake Enviroshingle as part of its exterior cladding design. Manufactured from 95% sustainable materials and is 100% recyclable. Enviroshingle is typically used as a premium roofing product known for its low maintenance requirements, weather resistance, and natural cedar-shake appearance. For this project, the product was used as a siding feature to create a distinctive architectural finish that adds texture and character to the building exterior. Skytec supported the integration of this unique application within the wall assembly design, helping ensure long-term, performance and durability.
